The Department of Physics at Southern University in Baton Rouge offers excellent Bachelor's and Master's of Science programs. Over the last ten (10) years it has aquired state-of-the-art computer resources that are integrated in learning, mentoring, teaching, and research. These resources are available through the two laboratories in the department. The laboratories have been categorized according to the service intended through them. One is the undergraduate instruction and learning laboratory which is called the Personal Computer Laboratory. This laboratory is conveniently located near the entrance of the department, in room 113, William James Hall. The other laboratory is for graduate learning and research which is called High Performance Computing Laboratory. This is located in room 130, William James Hall. Both the laboratories are fully networked. All the computers are networked and connected to the Internet. Personal Computer Laboratory (PC Lab; for
undergraduate instruction and learning )
Personal Computer Laboratory
(PC Lab)
This is called PC Lab since all the computers that it hosts are Personal Computers. It has twenty (20) Gateway 2000 Pentium PC's ( 90 to 200 MHz). These PCs are complete with features like multimedia development kits and network connectivity. They are loaded with scientific packages and programming software.Various wordprocessing, spreadsheets, graphics, and database software products are also loaded on these PCs. This lab is used for undergraduate instruction and learning. This lab serves as an ideal choice for several workshops held on campus. High performance Computing
Laboratory (HPC Lab) The High Performance Computing Laboratory is the center of powerful computing. It is equipped with the high performing Silicon Graphics machines and Gateway2000 computers. There are: (a) one (1) Origin2000 server, (b) seven (7) O2 workstations, and (c) nine (9) Gateway 2000 PCs. All the computers are networked and connected to the Web.
The Origin 2000 server tackles the needs of demanding computations. It has four (4) processors with up to 1 million mega flops per second of computing power. It is fully loaded with parallel compilers, database, visualization and Web development software. ] The seven (7) O2 workstations with web-integrated interface are loaded with compilers for programming in C, C++, Java and Fortran. Also loaded are the physics analysis packages, scientific visualization and Web development software. The O2s incorporate unique features like 3D graphics, powerful image processing and real-time video processing. These powerful Silicon Graphics workstations, present an excellent computing environment for graduate students engaged in research. For a description of some of the current research projects, please see our web-site at http://suphys.phys.subr.edu/phys/research.htm Personal Computers All the nine (9) Pentium PC's in HPC Lab have a processing speed of 166 MHz, Windows NT operating environment and are connected to the Web.
